The salt chlorinator system works in tandem with salt you add to the pool water. Its internal salt cell, plumbed inline with the return pipe, contains coated metal blades that use electrolysis to split the salt water flowing through it into hydrogen and hypochlorous acid. The hypochlorous acid replaces traditional chlorine sanitizer.
When you open your pool in the spring, you will generally need to add 3 bags of salt to the pool water, as the existing water will be diluted by fresh water from your hose. Because salt does not evaporate and remains in your pool, only minor salt adjustments will be needed during the season. These adjustments will be due to water dilution from heavy rains, backwashing your filter, or loss of water from pool use and splashing.
The unit contains a display that alerts you to any issues with salt levels or chlorine production. Please note that salt systems will not generate chlorine until the water is approximately 70°F and the salt is at the appropriate level. In the spring, you may need to add traditional chlorine to colder water to keep it sanitized and clear until your water is heated.
When using the unit, be sure to manage the pH level in your water to protect your pool liner and equipment. Also, be sure to check if discharging salt water into your local sewer system is allowed in your municipality.
