How to Maintain Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters eliminate the need for backwashing weekly but should be cleaned 2-3 times per season. The indicators that your pool filters need to be cleaned would be anytime the PSI on the round pressure gauge is reading 6+ psi more than the starting pressure when the cartridges were brand new or more than approximately 18psi overall. This is a sign the filters are plugged or dirty which will obstruct water flow and can impact your pool’s ability to function normally. Follow the owners manual instructions to remove and clean cartridge filters when needed based on the PSI reading on the pressure gauge. Once per year, ideally at the end of the season once the pool is closed, rinse filters down and use Filter Brite to chemically clean filters so they last longer and are ready for the spring opening.

When to replace Cartridge Filters
Pool cartridge filters need to be replaced every 3-5 seasons so they and your pool system can continue to perform correctly. When cartridge filters are older or need to be replaced, you will notice the PSI is often higher than desired even if the filters have been recently cleaned which slows down water flow and affects your whole pool system. This can lead to cloudy water, chemical inefficiency, poor suction at the skimmer making it difficult to vacuuming the pool, or even the pool heater not working. Your pool can only be as clean as your filters so keep your filters clean and replace them when needed for a more enjoyable pool experience.
