Balancing your hot tub water is one of the most important things you can do to keep your spa clean, safe, and long-lasting. It’s the foundation for everything else — from weekly care to cozy winter soaks.
Whether you’re new to hot tub ownership or just want a refresher, this guide will walk you through the key water parameters and how to keep them in check.

🏠 Balancing Is the House, Weekly Care Is the Furniture
If weekly care is your hot tub’s furniture and knick-knacks, then water balance is the house you keep them in. Both matter — but without a strong foundation, even the best weekly routine won’t hold up.
Key Terms
ppm (parts per million):
Hot tub products are strong, so we use low levels to keep things safe. 1 ppm = 0.0001% — tiny but mighty.
Balancer:
Any product that adjusts total alkalinity, pH, or calcium hardness. These are your tools for keeping water in range.
💨 Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
TDS is like dust in your hot tub — it builds up slowly and affects how well your chemicals work.
- Why it matters: High TDS makes sanitizers less effective
- How to test: Once a month, in-store only
- Ideal range: Below 2500 ppm
- How to fix: You can’t lower TDS — just drain and refill
- Seasonal tip: In Canada, before winterizing your outdoor hoses, drain and refill your hot tub so you start the season with fresh water.
🧱 Total Alkalinity (TA)
Alkalinity is the foundation of your water balance. It keeps pH stable and protects your hot tub from corrosion and scale.
- Why it matters: Low TA = corrosion; high TA = scaling
- How to test: Weekly, at home
- Ideal range: 100–120 ppm
- How to adjust:

pH is the frame of your water balance — it affects comfort, sanitizer performance, and equipment health.
- Why it matters:
- Low pH = irritation and corrosion
- High pH = cloudy water and poor sanitation
- How to test: Weekly, at home
- Ideal range: 7.2–7.8
- How to adjust:
- Fun fact: Chlorine tubs tend to drop in pH; bromine tubs tend to rise
🧊 Calcium Hardness
Calcium is your insulation — it protects plastic parts and keeps water from getting cloudy or corrosive.
- Why it matters:
- Low calcium = erosion
- High calcium = scale and cloudiness
- How to test: Monthly, in-store
- Ideal range: 150–250 ppm
- How to adjust:
- Raise with Protect or Balance Pak 300
- Always premix before adding
- You can raise calcium, but you can’t lower it without replace some of the water
- Local tip: Mississauga water is usually 90–100 ppm — so you’ll need to add calcium
🛡️ Sanitizer (Chlorine or Bromine)
Sanitizer is your security system — it keeps your water clean and safe.
- Why it matters:
- Low = bacteria risk
- High = irritation
- How to test: Weekly, at home
- Ideal range: 3–5 ppm
- How to adjust:
- Raise with granular sanitizer
- Let it drop naturally over time
- Use Neutralizer only with expert advice
- Important: Don’t switch between chlorine and bromine without draining first
🧪 Testing Your Water
- Weekly at home: Alkalinity, pH, Sanitizer
- Monthly in-store: TDS, Calcium
- Test kits vs. strips:
- Kits = more precise, takes ~5 mins
- Strips = faster, less exact
🧭 Balancing Order
To keep things smooth, adjust in this order:
- Alkalinity
- pH
- Calcium
- Sanitizer
Run jets for 15 minutes between each step to mix everything properly.
