Can you get COVID-19 (Corona Virus) from pools and hot tubs?

If your family is like ours, you’re closely following the latest updates surrounding coronavirus (COVID-19). Flights and travel options are becoming limited, leaving us to take “staycations” and rely more on our pools and hot tubs for summer fun.

Now that the World Health Organization has deemed coronavirus a pandemic, our customers are showing concern about whether the infection can be transmitted through the water in their pools and hot tubs.

Our team appreciates your concern, and understands that your pool and hot tub are often the focal points of backyard entertainment with family and friends. The last thing anyone wants is to cause illness in those close to us.

We looked into this for you, and are happy to report that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that there is no evidence that the coronavirus can be transmitted via the use of pools or hot tubs.

The CDC also reassures is that “proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

In other words, as long as you are properly maintaining your pool or hot tub with the right balance of pool chemicals, you won’t have to worry about the transmission of coronavirus from one individual to another while sharing the same body of water.

As with any leisure activity, following proper hygiene practices before and after swimming will aid in the prevention of spreading any bacteria, virus, or fungus.

However, if you or someone close to you starts to exhibit signs of fever, has a dry cough, or has difficulty breathing, they should refrain from social activities, including swimming or using a hot tub, and visit their family doctor or public heath office immediately.
